Knights of the Realm of Berme
I just finished maybe the oldest project I have had for Bretonnia.
When I started in 1996 I wanted to have several knights with their small retinue. So I painted a blue-red knight and two blue-red archers and so on. At some point I started to paint some men at arms black and yellow, because I planned to paint a black and yellow Knight of the Realm. I already figured out I would have used the black bull decals together with the yellow ones. It was 1998.
In the building of the army, I reduced the amount of heraldry to only two: for the castle Domanne a red and white coat of arms, while for the twin fortress of Berme.. a black and yellow one!
I then made two Grail Knights with those heraldry and a full bunch of men at arms and archers. But I never did that Knight of the Realm I started with.
Until now.
I am working to complete 4000 points of my Bretonnians to play a great event at the end of the month. I realized that my second unit of Knights of the Realm themed around the Castle of Berme was only 9 men strong. While in the 6th and following editions a large Lance formation was limited to 9 knights, in the Old World, as well as in the 5th edition, it needs to be 10 knights.
I then decided to complete both the unit and that very, very old project of mine.
To paint again an old plastic Knight of the Realm was a sort of time machine, it brought me back to that beginning. Moreover it showed me how much I learnt in these 29 years of the hobby.
The new head comes form Monstrous Encounters. I think it is a great reinterpretation of the old plastic helm with bull from 5th edition.
And now the full unit in its all glory:
